Fake Turtle Eggs to Catch Poachers

By Kimberli Bindschatel

Ha! How innovative. In my internet travels, researching my current book, I came across this wonderful story. The first line of the article: They come by night and they steal the future. It’s about turtle egg poaching and some really nifty new way to fight it.

It seems, some brilliant nonprofit Paso Pacifico, has created fake eggs that contain a GSM transmitter hidden inside. The project was one of the winners of the Wildlife Crime Tech Challenge, organized by U.S. Aid for International Development, National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institution, and TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network. Read the whole story. And congrats to Paso Pacifico. Go get ’em!
