Sea Otter with Snow Crab, Resurrection Bay, Alaska

By Kimberli Bindschatel

©2017 Kimberli A. Bindschatel

I was reminded recently of time spent on a wildlife cruise out of Seward, Alaska out into Resurrection Bay. The captain was a friendly young woman from northern Michigan. She told my husband and me a few stories, one in particular about an inmate in the local maximum security prison there, that inspired some events in my recent novel, Operation Grizzly Camp.

We left the dock at noon and I had my camera at the ready, but didn’t expect anything until we were further out and wasn’t thrilled about the noon light. But, as fate would have it, the captain informed us to look to for an otter who was off the port side. And there he was, crunching away on this snack. Never seen that before!

Operation Grizzly Camp is now on sale at Amazon.com

With each release of a new book I get all excited and nervous and my brain turns fuzzy. Months of preparation. Zillions of ideas, picked through and organized into a plot. Writing a novel is quite the project. But the result is always a joy to share. So, enjoy!

Soon to be released…

By Kimberli Bindschatel

It’s with the proofreaders. Operation Grizzly Camp.

Deep in the wilds of Alaska, wealthy poachers kill bears for entertainment, an age-old bloodsport for the biggest, rarest trophies. Special Agent Poppy McVie and her partner, Dalton, go undercover, posing as hunters to take them down. But to play the part, Poppy will actually have to hunt. Sure, she can handle a weapon, but use it on an animal? Not only that, this time around, she’s posing as Dalton’s sister. Can they hide the passion that’s been building between them?

When Poppy and Dalton find themselves fighting for survival against the most vicious predator on Earth, Poppy faces the ultimate decision: kill or be killed.

Brown Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska

By Kimberli Bindschatel

Four years ago I was in Alaska for the fourth time. This trip was extra special for two reasons: my parents came along and it was September which meant fall color. Wow, the tundra glows in oranges and reds. There’s nothing like it. And to see a bear standing amid the blaze was breathtaking. My only regret was being stuck on the Denali park school bus, shooting out the window. But sometimes, you take what you can get. I would’ve hopped off the bus right there, but park rules don’t allow passengers to disembark near wildlife. A good policy. Still, all in all, a sight worth every breath.

Baby Orca, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

In 2011, I had the opportunity to spend ten days aboard the M/V Sea Wolf. What an adventure! We kayaked and hiked in glorious Glacier Bay. One day in particular will forever remain etched in my memory. We encountered a small pod of orca. Residents, they circled, pursuing schools of fish. Then we saw this tiny infant among them, bobbing beside mom. The white eye patch and belly still had an orangish tint from the amniotic fluid. What a joy!

Seeing killer whales move through the water is an amazing sight. The speed and ease with which they travel is breathtaking. You know they are predators just by being in their presence. I felt my heart rate increase even though I was safe onboard a 90 ft. vessel. I cannot wait to see one again.

Glacier, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

By Kimberli Bindschatel

There is something magical about ice. All the glaciers I’ve seen have been on my mind this month, with the climate conference in France and winter coming.

I’ve held a piece of glacial ice in my hand. It was so crystal clear, it was like holding a magical, crystal ball. Eons of compression take every air bubble out. Amazing. And the shear mass of the ice wall on one of these things, especially the tidal glaciers, where massive chunks fall off, thundering into the sea. It’s indescribable. I highly recommend you see one for yourself. And soon. Before they are all gone.

Glaciers are a photographer’s dream. The lines, shapes, forms, are a joy to explore visually. I have hundreds of photos, every one dramatically different.

Ice. Amazing.

My fourth trip to Alaska was in September and I got to see the tundra in fall color, a long time dream. It was truly spectacular. Like a red carpet, rolled out to invite Winter.

Brown Bear, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

This mama bear had her cub safely tucked away behind her, up the hill side. I was in a kayak and didn’t intend to get so close. Waves pushed me closer and closer. I was probably 30 yards from her, slowly back paddling. She kept her eye on me but didn’t seem too alarmed. Good thing because bears are good swimmers.
