Oh so horny

By Kimberli Bindschatel

Here are 5 American sex norms Europeans think are crazy

Today I’m pondering sex in our culture. Why? Two experiences collided. The first, recent comments from readers and friends regarding Poppy’s sexuality. The second, an article I read about how Europeans think American views on sex are batshit crazy. (Yep, that’s a quote from the article.) You can read it here.

The article discusses issues that I’ve pondered such as the casual prevalence of violence in this country vs. the outright denouncement of anything sex-related, how slut-shaming is commonplace, how we fear any human physical contact might be misconstrued as sexual (no hugs for you!). It really is messed up, if you ask me. The legacy of a puritan heritage is perpetuating a lot of pent up anger.

So, I have to ask: what is so wrong about sex? The hormones released during sex alone could make the world a better place. Sex, love and peace on Earth, my friends.

What do you think?

Shelter animals 7-15-15

By Kimberli Bindschatel

Since 2011, I have volunteered at my local animal shelter, Cherryland Humane Society. I photograph the cats and dogs to give them their best paw forward when looking for their fur-ever homes. I hope you’ll consider volunteering as well.

Common Loon and Chicks, Boardman Lake, Michigan

By Kimberli Bindschatel

It’s that time of year again. My loon ranger duties are on. My parents have also become loon rangers this year as they had a nesting pair on their lake last year. I tried to find the nest without success and alas, no babies this year.

The loon in this image was a pair I photographed quite regularly on a reservoir near my home. The dam has since been removed and I don’t know where they’ve moved on to, but at the time, they were a pretty successful mating pair.

My Gravestone

By Kimberli Bindschatel

legion lake 109Someone asked recently, what would you like on your tombstone? In other words, what is your legacy?  I immediately answered: She helped the animals of this world. Since I was a young child, I’ve loved all critters. My eyes would light with delight whenever we saw wildlife. My mom even describes my life in terms of animal phases. My bedroom was redecorated many times. I’ll never forget the giant frog she sewed to my bedspread. Then there was the giraffe stage. Dolphins and bears still remain at the top of the list for me. There is something so special about them.

As an adult, I’ve centered vacations around where I am most likely to see wildlife. It’s no wonder [Read more…]

Spring Pollinators

By Kimberli Bindschatel

Everyone is talking about bees and the threat their demise poses to crops, and ultimately, food. Perhaps you’re wondering what you can do to help. National Wildlife Federation has an excellent article on just that. Check it out:

American Bald Eagle, Katmai National Park, Alaska

In Alaska, they say there is a bald eagle for every mile of coastline. I don’t doubt it. These majestic birds soar over the seashores, circling, their sharp eyes on the lookout for prey. An awesome sight.

Sea Otter Floating in Kelp Bed, Raspberry Island, Alaska

I found this guy amid a raft of otters nearly a hundred strong near Raspberry Island off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska in 2005.  I was there to see bears, so this was such a bonus. These critters are too adorable. Their cute little faces, their mannerisms. An amazing experience!
